On August 3, 1987, Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences (IGIPESS) was established by the Delhi Administration under the aegis of the University of Delhi, New Delhi.
It is one of the leading co-education institutions that also houses the Department of Physical Education & Sports Sciences under the Faculty of Inter-Disciplinary and Applied Sciences, the University of Delhi offering all the categories of teacher training courses in physical education.
On January 15, 1998, the institute recognized and included by University Grants Commission (UGC) among colleges section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956 and become eligible to receive central assistance in terms of the rules framed under section 12-B of the UGC Act, 1956 (vide UGC letter No. F.8-32/97(CPP-I).
In the beginning, a three years degree course viz. B.Sc. (Physical Education, Health Education, and Sports) was started in the institute in 1987. It also now offers B.P.Ed. (Bachelor of Physical Education, One year) and M.P.Ed. (Master of Physical Education, Two years) courses recognized by National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE), Jaipur.
Apart from these courses, the institute offers add-on courses to the B.P.Ed. students namely: Aerobics, Yoga, Sports for All, Sports Journalism, Gym Operation, Personality Development and Computer Application in Physical Education. So, students should have to opt one add-on courses in the second semester.
Based one academic education, the institute has well-qualified staff, adequately laboratories and rich library with latest books and research journals.
IGIPESS aims to provide the quality education to the future teachers. With the correct mix of technology and human touch, the Institute empowers the aspiring teachers to propagate education through the rungs of the society so that they serve the nation while making a satisfying career for themselves.
The institute has well-qualified staff, adequately staff, adequately equipped laboratories and rich library with latest books and research journals. IGIPESS strives to inculcate appropriate values and qualities required to develop sportspersons and physical education professionals at various levels.
Various teaching and learning techniques are being used by the faculty to impart knowledge and skills to students at Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences (IGIPESS) in its various departments.
